Cape Measurement Reference

Accurate cape measurements are critical for selecting the right form and achieving a natural-looking mount.

Essential Deer Cape Measurements:

  • Neck circumference (base): Measure around the neck at the base where it meets the shoulders
  • Neck circumference (mid): Measure at the midpoint between the base and the jaw
  • Eye-to-nose: From the front corner of the eye to the tip of the nose
  • Eye-to-eye: Between the inside corners of both eyes
  • Ear butt to ear butt: Across the top of the head behind the ears
  • Ear length: From the base to the tip of the ear

  • Common Mistakes to Avoid:

  • Measuring over hair instead of pulling the tape snug
  • Taking measurements after the cape has dried (measurements change)
  • Forgetting to measure both sides of asymmetrical features

  • When to Measure:

  • Take preliminary measurements before skinning when possible
  • Take final form-fitting measurements after fleshing but before tanning
  • Remember that tanning causes 5-15% shrinkage depending on the method
